Midlands International Polo 2019

Sunday 12 May | Lions River Polo Club, Dargle | South Africa vs Australia (14 Goal)

The Midlands International Polo is now a firmly-entrenched favourite event with the local community and draws crowds from all around the Midlands, the Drakensberg region, Pietermaritzburg and Durban. The 2019 event was played in perfect autumnal conditions at the beautiful venue in Lions River.

The 14-goal South African team was captained by Brett Watson and included debutantes Jabulani Khanyile and Michael John Marlton as well as previous South African player Bradley MacGibbon. They were pitted against a young Australian side, also 14 goals, captained by Jack Kiely whose entire family play the game including his mother and sister. As would be expected from two equally-matched sides the game was well contested but the touring side took advantage of their opportunities quicker than their South African counterparts.

The first half of the game was dominated by Australia but South Africa answered with two quick goals in the fourth chukka that bought the score back to 6 - 4. The second half was evenly contested but Australia ran away with the victory in the end winning 10 goals to 6.

Man of the Match award, adjudicated by Michael Rattray, went to Australia’s James Lester who played an outstanding game in defence in the number 4 position. The Australian Team’s Best Pony award went to “Eish” owned by Graeme Brooke-Leggatt and ridden by Jack Kiely. The South African Team’s Best Pony award went to “K.T.” owned by Mark Davies and ridden by MJ Marlton.

The main curtain raiser was between Michaelhouse and Hilton old boys’ sides. The men in black, Hilton, proved to be too strong on the day winning 7 goals to 4. Go to the Result page on the SA Polo website to see the full listing.
